Within the John Eliot School, two programs published by the Committee for Children are used to help promote social and emotional learning. The primary grades utilize SECOND STEP. SECOND STEP is a violence prevention program which integrates academics with social and emotional learning. Kids learn and practice vital social skills, such as empathy, emotion management, problem solving, and cooperation. These essential life skills help students in the classroom, on the playground, and at home.
To help extend and deepen student's understanding of social and emotional learning, the fourth and fifth graders utilize Steps to Respect. Steps to Respect is a bully prevention program, to help establish a safe, caring, and respectful school climate. Throughout the program, children will: practice friendship-making skills, learn to recognize bullying, learn bullying-refusal skills, learn how to reach out to someone who is being bullied, and develop bullying-reporting skills.
